Hey there! If you're like me, you grew up watching your mom or grandma make the fluffiest white rice without measuring a single thing. They just knew when it was perfect. But when you try it yourself? Not so much! Don't worry - I've got you covered with some super easy ways to make rice that turns out great every time.

Before we dive in - let's talk about white rice versus brown rice. You've probably heard that brown rice is healthier, but here's the thing: what matters more is how much rice you eat and what you pair it with. Love white rice? Keep enjoying it! Just try to fill half your plate with vegetables and protein-rich dals or curries. This way, you naturally end up eating a balanced meal without giving up the rice you love. Now, let's learn how to cook it perfectly!

Quick Rice Tips Before We Start

  • Rinse your rice! I know it seems like extra work, but trust me, it makes a difference
  • You don't need any fancy equipment (though it helps!)
  • Each method below works great - pick what's easiest for you

The Classic Stovetop Method

This is how most of our moms did it - with their trusty finger trick! While measurements help, they don't tell the whole story. That's why I'm sharing both - the exact measurements plus mom's finger trick (where the water should come up to just below your first knuckle when you place your index finger on top of the rice). Using both tips together is the secret to getting it right every time!

You get the fluffiest rice once you master this technique.

Common Questions I Get Asked

Help! My rice turned out mushy!

Depending on whichever method you are using, too much water, my friend. Next time, use a little less water or cook it for less time.

Can I make extra for tomorrow?

Absolutely! Just store it in the fridge and sprinkle some water when reheating. Storing it for the next day might even be better for you.

My mom never measured anything - how did she do it?

Years of practice! But until you get there, these tricks and measurements won't let you down.

Remember, there's no shame in using modern gadgets to make perfect rice. Whether you're making it to go with dal, curry, or just some pickle and ghee (no judgment!), these methods will give you perfect rice every time. Happy cooking!

P.S. Want to jazz it up? Add a pinch of salt and a small spoon of ghee while cooking. Trust me on this one! 😉
